I once visited the Bluebird Toffee factory in Hunnington, near Halesowen. I had a job to photograph the visit of a t.v. celebrity (of the time) whose character name was ‘Stan Ogden’, married to the far more famous ‘Hilda Ogden’ of Coronation Street.
As I arrived, I was greeted by a member of the Bluebird publicity department, a pleasant young woman. I commented to her how the toffee factory always smelt very appealing whenever I passed by, and wondered how the company prevented the employees from munching through the profits? She smiled as if I had asked an amusing or witty question, and told me she would explain as we went around the factory.
Following our soap hero as he posed for photographs and shaking hands with the workers, the aroma of the toffee was quite overpowering. The publicity officer reminded me of my question, she said that usually the intense smell was enough to put off most new recruits from being tempted to pilfer any toffees, but if that didn’t cure them, they would be sent home each day with as many toffees as they could carry, the inevitable overdose of which left them feeling quite nausious, and cured them once and for all.
Very kindly, my publicity friend sent me home with a carrier bag of their famous ‘Gold bullion’ toffee bars. Funny old thing, I couldn’t bring myself to touch a single one.
